- Youngsters of the 1st Fenstanton & Hilton Scout Group, with their families, made the most of the great weather on Saturday 9th February as they helped the RSPB with important work at Fen Drayton Lakes.
- Mixed teams of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts aged 6 to 14 worked hard to help with the preservation of new trees planted all around the main nature walk. This work involved the removal of the plastic "rabbit guards" from the trunks of new trees that are now established in their growth.
- Earlier this month Neil Renwick, Community Projects Officer, went along to Section meetings to talk about the work of the RSPB and the proposed project. Everyone had great fun making some bird cakes to hang out in their gardens as part of the Big Garden Bird Watch.
- This is all part of a programme of joint activities and events with the RSPB to help the youngsters potentially earn several badges, including their Environment Partnership Award. Amongst other activities Lynne Radbone, Scout Leader, has arranged for the Group to help the Reserve carry out several projects over the next few months.
- Neil Renwick – " When you plan for a work party in early February, you think cold and wet and miserable. I wish all our days could be like it was on Saturday - t-shirt weather and lots of happy young people (and some not quite so young), working hard and well, enjoying what they were doing, and doing more than we expected to be done. We're in the happy position of having tidy piles of tree guards at the side of the track, waiting for bags to take them away in, plus one big full bag that wouldn't go into the truck with the others. The nature reserve visitors who walked by looked on with approval, and I'm sure many more will see what has been done today. And (perhaps best of all) several of the youngsters were asking when they could come back and do some more!"
- Lynne Radbone - "Neil was very impressed not only with the volume of work completed but he was also impressed by all the children’s attitude and enthusiasm for the job. In fact so many children asked him if they could have another go at the work that he has suggested another session in the Autumn when all the birds have nested. So a big "well done "to all concerned, parents included. It makes us very proud to see our Scout Group so well supported and to hear our children praised for their behaviour and commitment. "
