Back in June 2006, thanks mainly to a grant from Cumbria Youth Alliance’s “Outdoor Bursary Fund” Ayers Explorer Scout Unit took part in an extreme sports weekend in Milton Keynes. Whilst there, the members had their first snowboarding lesson; on the real snow slope at XSCAPE. After the trip the members were really enthused by the snowboarding and wanted to continue their lessons. This was found to be expensive, but thanks to support from the Local Network Fund managed locally by Cumbria Community Foundation, they were able to continue the lessons on the XSCAPE slope at Braehead. With the members keen to put what they had learnt into practice they joined Keswick Scouts trip to Austria in February half-term. They are extremely grateful to the various Neighbourhood Forums around the City who supported their members in taking part in the trip. In spite of the trip starting with 31 hours on a coach! The week itself was a great success, the 22 members from Ayers who took part have not stopped talking about the trip since they got back and many new friendships were made with Scouts from Eden District. It was amazing to see how quickly people who had never been on the slopes before progressed. At the end of the week there was even a time trial slalom event. Other activities included a tobogganing, Austrian Bowling and a trip to the local swimming pool. Check out www.AyersExplorerScouts.org for lots of pictures and videos from the week.
