Thanks to our generous friends at First ScotRail,  Arrochar Scouts had the opportunity to experience a trip on the  famous West Highland Line, one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world.

We had promoted the day out as a family experience and we end up with a group of 19, ranging from 8 years old to 80.    Arrochar & Tarbet station sits on the West Highland Line but we had all been guilty of travelling south to Helensburgh and Glasgow rather than sampling the delights on offer towards Fort William, Mallaig and Oban.

 West Highland Line

The train arrives right on time and we start our 2.5 hour journey to Fort William.   Families come armed with an array of books, ipods, cards, and even dominoes, but the conversation flows and the scenery is spectacular.     Around every corner is another great panoramic view, whether it be the rugged mountains of the Scottish Highlands or the flat, desolation of Rannoch Moor.

On cue, we arrive in Fort William.  We have 5 hours to enjoy ourselves.   We buy new walking boots, visit the swimming pool, indulge in some shopping, and visit a local restaurant for an early dinner.

The return journey is equally pleasing, although I think we overdid the donoughts, crisps, dips, sweets, cakes and snacks.   We also find that our octogenarian is a hustler at dominoes.  She walks away with the tournament crown,  highlighting a mis-spent retirement.   Well done Granny J.

Thanks to all the staff at ScotRail.  They looked after us well.
